Who made it?
There are some really good pumpkin ales out there, I wouldn't call them all off by trying one brewer.

I have tried probably somewhere around 5 pumpkin ales. Not a large number, but enough to give me an impression as to what is good and bad about each one. I know that I really disliked the Blue Moon pumpkin ale, but the New Holland Ichabod Ale wasn't too shabby and I'd have another. There are waaaay too many variants on each style of beer to rule it out after just one try.

I did that with Stouts. First stout I tried was terrible (don't remember what kind) and I swore them off. I went to the GABF and tried all kinds of stouts and found some of the best beers I've ever had.

Was it the one made by Anheuser-Busch? I forget the exact name - but I saw it last night.
I've tried a few of the special/seasonal/whatever beers Anheuser-Busch makes. They all pretty much suck. I picture Bud Light coming down the line and some guy adding some food coloring and artifical flavor to it.
I was tricked the first few times I bought their special/seasonal/whatever offerings, but I'd say I'm done with it now.
Beyond that, I would definitely try a pumpkin ale.

The Shipyard and Dogfish Head make good Pumpkin ales. Some pumpkin ales are kind of s***y and I'm not too fond of that. The DFH one tastes like pumpkin pie
EDIT: uhhhhhh, the word above with stars is spycee, why the hell is that word considered bad

FWIW: Just checked the fridge and it is from Buffalo Bill's Brewery. Pure rancid s***. I'll have to give the others a try...obviously you can't send a wife out to pick up quality beer.

I think with stouts and porters, you have to start developing a palate for them. It was the same way with me, honestly. I tried a few stouts, didn't care for them, and over time I started liking them more and more. In fact, the first stout I tried I didn't like at all, tried it again a few months later and it is now one of my favorites.
And Mattbta- If you're a fan of pumpkin, go out and try a different pumpkin ale or two... and no, probably best to not let your wife pick up the beer.

Not sure which you tried. However, "Punkin Ale" by Dogfish Head is pure sex when it comes to pumpkin flavored beer.

I went to a Fall beer Festival last weekend and the best beer by far was the Dogfish Head Punkin Ale. Excellent beer and well worth the price.

Jack's Pumpkin s***e Ale. Not terrible, but not delicious either. Last Thanksgiving was held at my sister's house, and I brought a 6 pack of the Dog Fish Head and my brother-in-law, who loves his Anheuser products told me "no need, I got the Bud Pumpkin Ale". I tried his, to be polite and he said "What do you think?".
I tossed him a Dog Fish Head and he was so shocked by the difference he tossed the remaining 4 Jack's Pumpkin s***e out.
