Default Outhouse Fermentation

This isn't really a recipe i guess, but I have been wildland firefighting for the passed 4 seasons, and one of my engine bosses told me this about the Convict Crews that sometimes help us out on project fires

The convict crews get their own portion of camp, fit with their own outhouses (port-o-johns for you noobs )

Anyway, i guess they would designate one outhouse that they would NOT use, and they would tape a garbage bag inside the shi*ter.

After breakfast/lunch/dinner, they would come back to camp packing all the fruit they could carry and put it in the bag, and wait for it to ferment.

I was slightly skeptical about this, since we work on fires on two week stints. does this work? is it safe? has anyone done this THEMSELF?

A food service bucket would be safer and probably more effective.

(sugary fruit) + (Yeast) + (liquid) + (time) = Some kind of alcohol in a mixture.

The Yeast attacks the sugars in the ferment and makes alcohol out of it to discourage competition from other microbes.

But then you have to distill it, otherwise people probably won't want to drink it.
