anyways, some of the good ones to try when just starting ...
Im trying to make my way over to scotch but it's so harsh... and you pretty much have to drink it straight, correct? Im trying... I love all things bourbon but scotch gags me... I try all the time though how'd you get to it?

take a whiskey glass, 3-4 cubes of ice, cover over or just over the ice in scotch, add a splash of water, and enjoy
Reviving an old thread... If you get a chance try the Glenlivet 21 year which is spectacular (the 18 is my fav for the price). I think Dewars is great for a blend and if you like to drink a lot on the cheap... The stuff is super consistent too

Crazy forbes link, I would never pay the 10k for those blends, but I would drop 2k for that Bruichladdich. I *kill* for Islay malt scotches. My scotch of choice of Laphroaig.

I tried my first scotch the other day, Johnnie Walkler Black and at first it taste really good, but then the alcohol hits and i dont like it. So my question is, are there any good scotch that has less then 40% alcohol? any 20 or 30 proof scotch? Its the damn alcohol that kills the taste, i think it would be better with less alcohol. Plus im a light weight and get drunk off 3 shots.

How did you drink it? You can mix it with water to weaken it, plus drink it over ice.
if there are i don't know of any. 40% = 80 Proof. So i don't expect you'll find any 10% or 15% whiskeys/scotchs. THere may be a fwe 30%/60Proofs, but i don't really recall. Under the US's proof system Proof is double the %. 40% is 80Proof. 50% is 100Proof, etc. The brits do it different.
I drank it straight, and tried it once with coke, but that was not very good. I guess i could try it on the rocks next time and let it sit for a minute so its watered down.

Had Whiskey? Same basic thing. to be called Scotch it needs to be made in Scotland. Its.... Good.
There are so many flavors, aftertastes, types, that is just uneplainable unless you've had some.
I've got some good scotch around here. Balvenie 10 year single malt. Not the best stuff around but for the money it's good. I've been told it is like the Glen whatever posted about above.

Drinking Scotch neat (room temp with no ice) is not the recommended way to develop a taste for it. Try it as suggested over rocks with a splash of water, the dilution actually helps to bring out the bouquet (sp) of the scotch which is very complex.
try softening it with a shot of water or some ice. Red is at the top of mixer grade and bottom of straight. the Macallens 12 i have has a bite to it, but a shot of water removes the bite and lets me actually taste the scotch.
How is the Glenfiddich? To get a small taste for scotch I got the little sample pack with the 12, 15 & 18 years. Is it a decent scotch for starters, or am I gonna hate myself in about 15 minutes?
its pretty good. just remember to drink some water between different scotchs, so you wash the previous taste off your tounge so as to not alter the next one.

scotch's to stay away from: johnny walker red (sucks)
I bought a bottle of that last week. The first drink was pretty good - nice and smooth, decent flavor. The next time I cracked open the bottle, it was harsh. I finished the bottle, but I've certainly had better.
I am cheap and therefore I dislike paying a lot of money. So Johnny Walker Red was attractive given the price ($23/750ml). I couldn't see spending $30 or more for the same amount.
The next bottle I bought was in that price range - Famous Grouse
Look at the grouse!
It's got a nice aroma and flavor for a cheap scotch.
So what do you recommend in the cheap scotch offerings?
I have been a whiskey and bourbon drinker for a while, but most of my clients drink scotch so I figured I would give it a try. I am thinking of picking up a couple of bottles tomorrow and can't decide which to try. For sure I will get the Dalmore 12yr or the Dalmore Cigar, but I can't decide between the GLENFIDDICH 12YR or the GLENLIVET 12YR. Any suggestions or other thoughts?

I think I'll just stick with Glenlivet. I finished a bottle of 12 and now I'm working on a bottle of 15. I don't really detect too much of a difference between the 12 and the 15. So next time I may just buy the 12 again.
