Quantum chromodynamics
I'd like to do research on string theory, cosmology, quantum gravity, or something highly theoretical and cutting edge; something relating to unification. Cosmology doesn't fall in there, but I find it interesting nonetheless.
But when you choose an area to research and write your dissertation on, your choices are limited by the faculty where you're doing it. You basically have to concentrate in an area where a faculty member is doing research.
Things weren't looking too promising for me to research in an area I considered interesting at my school. I knew of condensed matter physics - who the f*** cares about that? There was a professor doing s*** with lasers - interesting, but big f***ing deal as far as I'm concerned. Simulation physics - these guys use computers to solve various problems in physics - I probably would have chosen this area if there was nothing else because there seems to be a lot of variety in it, including quantum mechanics (plus two hot Chinese chicks in that group). The astronomy professors are only studying intra-galactic s***. One studies hot gases. Another cold gases. Another studies star formation. The last one is the only one that appeals to me. There are other areas too, none of which seemed to interest me.
I learned from other grad students about a professor that is doing quantum field theory - BINGO. So I went to talk to him. It wasn't quantum field theory, but hadron physics, or Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Now we're talking. So I'm pretty sure I'm going to join this professor's group. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any Chinese chicks working for him.
Here's an overview of QCD: Quantum chromodynamics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The downside is that the professor is a Jap. And I just don't know if I can trust that sneaky little slanty eyed yellow bastard.

It seems that physicists these days specialize in one area and don't know s*** about any other area. But if you consider some of the great names in physics, like Einstein, who could say what his specialization was in? Who can say what he wrote his these on? Starting out, he did some s*** in statistical physics, then worked on the photoelectric effect, then Special Relativity, quantum mechanics, General Relativity, and unification.
Feynman was another that's all over the board.
I guess what I concentrate in during school doesn't matter that much. I suppose I could do some postdocs at various universities to learn other s***.

Yeah, but no one knew enough to specialize in those until einstein unveiled them en mass.
He knew nothing compared to what people know now in those specialized areas..

QCD seems pretty interesting.
einstein never contributed much worth a damn other than general and special relativity btw.
why can't you study quantum cosmology? that's another really neat field..

Depends. Seems the going rate around here is 5-6 years. I've heard the advisor I'm about to choose will work your ass off, so with him, 4-5 years. And since I don't have a BS in physics, it will be at least an additional year of class work for me (which I'll use to pick up a MS degree). And I'm in my second semester.
Do the math.

Because there are no professors here that know anything about that. Read my first post - my choices are limited by the existing faculty.
I just got out of lab (I'm a TA). Damn, there's one chick in there I really want to bone. It's against the rules, though.

They make it against the rules because you will create an epic f4il of yourself if you try.

I'd go with Infinite Finites, but that's just me.

One of the Chinese chicks is a double major - physics and computer science.
