It has about 1/8" grooves cut into the bottom of it about 1/2" apart all the way around. Its basically a filter. The crushed grain sits in the cooler soaking in hot water. After that's done I open the valve and drain out all the liquid without all the crushed grain. Leaving me with all the sugars and stuff that I need to brew
