Somebody asked me to start a new one. So here it is.
In this one, in addition to the yt clips, I will post additional info about the song.
Let's get started with some Marshall Tucker Band
MTB, formed in SC, was one of the major Southern rock bands of the '70s. One of their trademark sounds is the use of a flute.
Fire On The Mountain came out in 1975 on their 4th album Searchin' for a Rainbow. It is the is the tragic tale of a man whose pursuit of gold cost him his life.
Quote:
Took my fam'ly away from my Carolina home
Had dreams about the West and started to roam
Six long months on a dust covered trail
They say heaven's at the end but so far it's been hell
And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there
We were diggin' and siftin' from five to five
Sellin' everything we found just to stay alive
Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars
Sinnin' was the big thing, lord and Satan was his star
And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there
Dance hall girls were the evenin' treat
Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street
Men were shot down for the sake of fun
Or just to hear the noise of their forty-four guns
And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there
Now my widow she weeps by my grave
Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save
Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame
All for a useless and no good worthless claim
And there's fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there
Fire on the mountain, lightnin' in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waitin' for me there
Waitin' for me there
Great songwriting, graet melody, great instrumentation... talent flows from these guys all around.
In 1973, MTB released their first album. On it was one of their most well-known songs, Can't You See.
Quote:
I'm gonna take a freight train, down at the station
I don't care where it goes
Gonna climb me a mountain, the highest mountain, Lord,
Gonna jump off, nobody gonna know
Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman, she been doin' to me
Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman been doin' to me
I'm gonna find me a hole in the wall, gona crawl inside and die
That lady, mean ol' woman Lord, done told me goodbye
Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman she been doin' to me
Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman been doin' to me
Gonna buy me a ticket now, as far as I can, ain't never comin' back
Take me Southbound, all the way to Georgia now, till the train run out of track
Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman, she been doin' to me
Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman been doin' to me
This clip contains a Charlize Theron montage set to the song...
Sharing the spotlight on MTB's first album with Can't You See is Take the Highway.
Quote:
Take the highway
Lord knows I've been gone too long
Lot of sad days, yeah
One day you'll turn around
and I'll be gone
And the time has finally come
for me to pack my bags and walk away
Hear me say...
I'll be back someday
But darlin' please don't
wait for me too long
There's just one place I can't stay
Memories of your love still linger on
And the time has finally come
for me to pack my bags and walk away
Here me say....
Take the highway
Take the highway
Take the highway
And the time has finally come
for me to pack my bags and walk away
Here me say...
Another Southern rock group, the Outlaws formed in Tampa, FL in 1972. In 1980 they put out an album called Ghost Riders, which contained an fantastic cover of a 1949 hit (Ghost) Riders in the Sky (also covered by Johnny Cash). But this cover is like no other, with an excellent triple guitar attack. This is one song that really gets inside you and almost makes you want to stand and put your hand over your heart.
Quote:
An old cowpoke went ridin' out one dark and windy day,
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw
A plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw.
Yipie i ay Yipie i oh
Ghost herd in the sky
Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
He saw the riders coming hard... and he heard their mournful cry
Yipie i ay Yipie i oh
Ghost riders in the sky.
Their face is gaunt their eyes were blurred their shirts all soaked
with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd but they 'aint caught 'em yet
'cause they've got to ride forever in the range up in the sky
On horses snorting fire as they ride hard hear them cry
Yipie i ay Yipie i oh
Ghost riders in the sky.
The riders leaned on by him he heard one call his name
If you want to save your soul from hell a riding on our range
Then cow-boy change your ways today or with us you will ride
Tryin' to catch this devil herd.... a-cross these endless
skies.
Yipie i ay Yipie i oh
Ghost riders in the sky.
Ghost riders in the sky.
Ghost riders in the sky.
From their 1st album: The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1
Quote:
Well its all right, riding around in the breeze
Well its all right, if you live the life you please
Well its all right, doing the best you can
Well its all right, as long as you lend a hand
You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring
Waiting for someone to tell you everything
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring
Maybe a diamond ring
(chorus 2)
Well its all right, even if they say youre wrong
Well its all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well its all right, as long as you got somewhere to lay
Well its all right, everyday is judgement day
Maybe somewhere down the road aways
Youll think of me, and wonder where I am these days
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays
Purple haze
(chorus 3)
Well its all right, even when push comes to shove
Well its all right, if you got someone to love
Well its all right, everythingll work out fine
Well its all right, were going to the end of the line
Dont have to be ashamed of the car I drive
Im just glad to be here, happy to be alive
It dont matter if youre by my side
Im satisfied
(chorus 4)
Well its all right, even if youre old and grey
Well its all right, you still got something to say
Well its all right, remember to live and let live
Well its all right, the best you can do is forgive
(chorus 5)
Well its all right, riding around in the breeze
Well its all right, if you live the life you please
Well its all right, even if the sun dont shine
Well its all right, were going to the end of the line
The Allman Brothers Band is another '70s Southern rock group that formed in 1969 in Macon, GA. Some say that the ABB is the group that all other Southern Rock Groups are measured by, including Skynyrd.
Jessica is an instrumental that came out in 1973 on their Brothers and Sisters album (also appearing on this album is the hit Ramblin' Man).
Lord, I was born a ramblin man,
Tryin to make a livin and doin the best I can.
And when its time for leavin,
I hope youll understand,
That I was born a ramblin man.
Well my father was a gambler down in georgia,
He wound up on the wrong end of a gun.
And I was born in the back seat of a greyhound bus
Rollin down highway 41.
Chorus
Im on my way to new orleans this mornin,
Leaving out of nashville, tennessee,
Theyre always having a good time down on the bayou,
Lord, them delta women think the world of me.
Chorus
[repeat and fade]
Lord, I was born a ramblin man...
Moxy is a band that formed in Toronto in 1974. Their music never got a lot of airplay on US stations. But if you happened to live near a decent radio station, you may have heard Sail On sail Away. It's an "underground hit", and in St. Louis it is known as a "K-SHE Classic." They were also popular in Texas.
It was released on Moxy's self-titled debut album in 1975. It's a great song with excellent guitar work, drum work, vocals and melody.
These guy put the jam in "Ram Jam," I tell you want...sheeeet.
Black Betty came out in 1977 on their self-title debut album, and it pissed off groups like the NAALCP, who tried to boycott it. But the song just flat-out rocks.
Whoa, black betty (bam-A-lam)
Yeah, black betty (bam-A-lam)
Black betty had a child (bam-A-lam)
The damn thing gone wild (bam-A-lam)
She's always ready (bam-A-lam)
She's so rock steady (bam-A-lam)
Whoa, black betty (bam-BA-lam)
Whoa, black betty (bam-BA-lam)

Black betty had a child (bam-BA-lam)
The damn thing gone blind (bam-BA-lam)
Whoa, black betty (bam-BA-lam)
Yeah, black betty BAM-BA-LAM
Ted Nugent released his self-titled debut album in 1975. Hey Baby is overshadowed by Stranglehold, which also appears on the album and is one of the greatest classic rocks songs of all time. But Hey Baby holds its own...
Quote:
Hey baby, tell me why you hangin 'round
Ain't got time for kissin I'm too busy messin in this town
All you pretty women, you're so far an' in between

Santana has been around a long time. In 1979 the album Marathon was released. And like many rock albums of the late '70s and early '80s, it contained it's arena-rock mega hit All I Ever Wanted, replete with jamming guitar work, durms (and bongos), etc...
What a shame they don't make music like this anymore.
Quote:
Well I told you `bout your attitude
And it didnt do me any good
Cause you took your love away
Left me here alone with all this lonely heartache.
There are places I remember
Where the ladies still are tender
Against you they cant compare
Baby weve just got to get it back together.
All I ever wanted was to be with you
All I ever wanted was to be with you.
I just got to get it through to you
That my loving heart is ever true
Please come back to where you belong
Girl you got to know Ill never do you wrong.
All I ever wanted was to be with you
All I ever wanted was to be with you.
Yeah you.
Oh oh.
All I ever wanted was to be with you
All I ever wanted was to be with you.
Well I told you `bout your attitude
And it didnt do me any good
`cause you took your love away.
All I ever wanted was to be with you
All I ever wanted was to be with you
All I ever wanted was to be with you
All I ever wanted was to be with you
You!
After listening to this song, I'm speechless. What can I say, but, "Damn..." This would be a good song for Michelob to learn on the guitar.
Satch Boogie redefines what it means to boogie. Released in 1987 on the Surfing With the Alien album, Satch lays down a mean guitar groove that's guaranteed to reach inside you and turn your adrenaline knob to MAX.
Blue Öyster Cult is a New York band formed in 1967 and attained widespread success in the '70s and early '80s, especially with their hits Godzilla and Don't Fear the Reaper. However, I really like this song - I Love the Night. It's so mellow; it'd be a great tune to play while getting blown and sipping on a glass of Wild Turkey.
I Love the Night was released in 1977 on the album Spectres, which also included Godzilla
Quote:
That night her kiss told me it was over
I walked out late into the dark
The misty gloom seems to soak up my sorrow
The further I went on I felt a spreading calm
Then suddenly my eyes were bathed in a light
And the lovely lady in white was by my side
She said "Like me I see you're walking alone
Won't you please stay?" I couldn't look away
She said I love the night
The day is OK and the sun can be fun
But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night
There's so much I can show and give to you
If you will welcome me tonight
If only you had been there my dear
We could have shared this together
No mortal was meant to see such wonder
One look in the mirror told me so
Come darkness I'll see her again
Yes I'm gonna go 'cause now I know
She said I love the night
The day is OK and the sun can be fun
But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night
There's so much that I can show and give to you
If you will welcome me tonight
If only you had been there my dear
We could have shared this together
Montrose, named for guitarist Ronnie Montrose, is a hard rockin' California band in the early 70s that featured Sammy Hagar on vocals before he split and went solo. Montrose's first album, released in 1973, contained three underground hits: Rock Candy, Bad Motor Scooter, and Space Station #5.
Quote:
When you need a friend,
Through thick and thin,
Don’t look to those above you.
When you’re down and out;
Ain’t no doubt -
Nobody wants you!
But you’re rock candy, Baby:
You’re hard, sweet, and sticky!
Yes!
You’re rock candy, Baby:
Hard, sweet, and sticky!
Oh, yes.
Hard sweet and...
Ooh, yeah.
When you’re seventeen,
Reaching for your dreams,
Don’t let no one reach them for you.
Pull up your pants -
Stretch out take a chance.
If it can be done,
Well, you can do it!
‘Cause you’re rock candy, Baby:
You’re hard, sweet, and sticky, yes, you are.
You’re rock candy, Baby:
So hard, sweet, and sticky, yes.
Oh!
Sweet...so sweet.
You’re rock candy, Baby:
Hard, sweet, and sticky! Yes, you...
You’re rock candy, Baby:
Ooh, hard, sweet, and sticky! Yeah!
You’re...
Hard!...Sweet, oh, yeah!
Rock candy, Baby:
Hard, sweet, and...
Lord, you’re so right!
You’re rock candy, Baby:
Oh, yeah!
Hard, sweet, and...
Sticky!
Start, with the sun
And move on out
The future's in the skies above
The heavens unfold
And a new star is born
Space and time makin' love
Chorus:
Oh what a time we had
Living on the ground
I've moved to station #5
See you next time around,
Next time aournd
As far you want, as close as you need
It's all in the mind, you know
This old world hasn't really seen it's day
It's here, time to go
Chorus
Remember when it was so clear
We were young, but the memory still remains
To pick fruit from a tree
Fish from the seas
Now nothing's left here, but the stains
Well I can't cry no more
Can only be glad
There's other places we can be
If the time suits you right
I'm leaving tonight
Come fly away
With me!
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Oh, yeah
Start, with the sun
And move on out
The future's in the skies above
The heavens unfold
A new star is born
Space and time makin' love
If you get lonely on your daddy's farm
Just remember I don't live too far.
And there's a red bridge that arcs the bay, yeah
You'll be at my place in less that a day.
So get on your bad motor scooter and ride
Up over to my place and stay all night.
First thing in the morning we'll be feeling all right
So get on your bad motor scooter and ride.
Ooh, the last I seen your face
I swore that no one would take your place.
Now since you've been gone I've been feelin' bad, yeah
I'd come out to your place (but)
I'm afraid of your dad. So you...
Ride, ride, ride.
Come on baby, ooh yeah.
Crank it on up!
In 1973 Fleetwood Mac released an album called Mystery To me, which contained a song called Hypnotized. This is another mellow rock song with good melody, vocals, melody, etc... The band is made up of musicians from the USA and UK.
The song Hypnotized was written by Fleetwood Mac member (at the time) Bob Welch.
Quote:
Its the same kind of story
That seems to come down from long ago
Two friends having coffee together
When something flies by their window
It might be out on that lawn
Which is wide, at least half of a playing field
Because theres no explaining what your imagination
Can make you see and feel
Seems like a dream
(they) got me hypnotized
Now its not a meaningless question
To ask if theyve been and gone
I remember a talk about north
Carolina and a strange, strange pond
You see the sides were like glass
In the thick of a forest without a road
And if any mans ever made that land
Then I think it wouldve showed
Seems like a dream
(they) got me hypnotized
They say theres a place down in mexico
Where a man can fly over mountains and hills
And he dont need an airplane or some kind of engine
And he never will
Now you know its a meaningless question
To ask if those stories are right
cause what matters most if the feeling
You get when youre hypnotized
This song will have you singin' "You're eyes got me..."
Bob Welch, a one-time member of Fleetwood Mac, put out a solo album in 1977 called French Kiss. It contained Ebony Eyes, a rock song with disco overtones, but still got play on AOR radio stations.
Sentimental Lady is also on the album.
Quote:
Have you seen that girl on the corner
Id like to take her out of her chains
Cause if I had my way with you baby
I would be chaging your life today
(chorus)
Your eyes got me dreaming
Your eyes got me blind
Your eyes got me hoping
That Ill be holding close tonight
(repeat chorus)
She was the same as a hundred ladies
But when my eyes looked at her I learned
That she was keeping a secret fire
And if I got real close Id burn
And so it looked like I had to move slowly
Just like a cat at night in the trees
Cause I was waiting for her to show me
That way that she liked her love to feel
You are here and warm
But I could look away and you'd be gone
Cause we live in a time
When meaning falls in splinters from our lives
And that's why I've travelled far
Cause I come so together where you are
And all of the things that I said that I wanted
Come rushing by in my head when I'm with you
14 joys and a will to be merry
And all of the things that we say are very
Sentimental gentle wind
Blowing through my life again
Sentimental Lady
Gentle one
Now you are here today
But easily you might just go away
Cause we live in a time
When paintings have no color, words don't rhyme
And that's why I've travelled far
Cause I come so together where you are
And all of the things that I said that I wanted
Come rushing by in my head when I'm with you
14 joys and a will to be merry
And all of the things that we say are very
Sentimental gentle wind
Blowing through my life again
Sentimental Lady
Gentle one
You are here and warm
But I could look away and you'd be gone
Cause we live in a time
When meaning falls in splinters from our lives
And that's why I've travelled far
Cause I come so together where you are
Yes and all of the things that I said that I wanted
Come rushing by in my head when I'm with you
14 joys and a will to be merry
And all of the things that we say are very
Sentimental gentle wind
Blowing through my life again
Sentimental Lady
Gentle one
Sentimental gentle wind
Blowing through my life again
Sentimental Lady
Gentle one
Sentimental gentle wind
Blowing through my life again
Sentimental Lady
Gentle one
Well sentimental gentle wind
Blowing through my life again
Sentimental Lady
Gentle one
Donnie Iris started out in the PA/OH area and released Back on the Streets in 1980, containing the hit Ah Leah.
Quote:
Yeah, it's been a long, long time.
Such a site, you're lookin' better than a body has a right to.
Don't you know we're playin' with the fire?
But we can stop this burnin' desire, Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Is it ever gonna end?
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah!
I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissin' them.
I never knew how badly I was missin' them.
We both know we're never going to make it,
but when we touch, we never have to fake it, Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Is it ever gonna end?
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! We ain't learned our lesson yet!
Baby, it's no good. We're just askin' for trouble.
I can touch you, but I don't know how to love you.
It ain't no use! We'er headed for disaster.
Our minds said, "No!" But our hearts were talkin' faster, Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah! Leah, Leah, Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
Ah! Leah, Leah, Leah!
Ah! Leah! We're never, ever, ever gonna make it yeah!
Ah! Leah!
Ah! Leah! Here we go again!
I had to include two videos of the same song: the original, and one of some babe named Leah.
Before English rockers Def Leppard hit the big time with their album Pyromania, they release a couple of earlier albums. Their first, On Through the Night in 1980 contained this song, Hello America. It's a basic, hard-rocking song without the "pop" that influenced their Pyromania and later stuff. If you didn't already know, you would probably not guess this was Def Leppard.
Quote:
Hello america, hello america
Hello america, hello america
Well Im takin me a trip Im going down to california
Yeah, Im gonna try hollywood and san pedro bay, yeah yeah
Ill tell ya what Im gonna do
Im gonna give my love to you
Im gonna take you where the lights are bright
Im gonna give you my love tonight
Hello america, hello america
Hello america, hello america
Im gonna get me a greyhound bus down the motorway
Im gonna spend a little time in frisco and l.a., yeah yeah
But when it gets to twelve oclock
And you feel that you gotta rock
Youd better let your hair hang down
So we can boogie all over town
Takin me a trip Im going down to california
Yeah, Im gonna try hollywood and san pedro bay, yeah yeah
Ill tell ya what Im gonna do
Im gonna give my love to you
So wont ya take me where the lights are bright
Wont you give me your love tonight
Hello america, hello america
Hello america, hello america
Hello america, hello america
Hello america, hello america
Back when Huey Lewis was huge, I didn't like him. He was too "pop" for my tastes. But now, looking (and listening back), I realize that he had some pretty damn good stuff. I think this song, in particular, is kind of catchy.
Huey Lewis is a San Francisco musician who put out Picture This in 1982 containing Do You Believe In Love.
Quote:
was walking down a one way street
Just a looking for someone to meet
One woman who was looking for a man
Now Im hoping that the feeling is right
And Im wondering if youll stay for the night
So Im coming (I dont wanna be lonely)
I wanna love you all over
Do you believe in love
Do you believe it true
Do you believe in love
Oh you can bet I believe it too
Now the feeling is beginning to grow
And the meaning is something you only know
If you believe it take my hand and Ill take your heart
Now Im wondering where does true love begin
Im going under so Im lettin you in
My woman (I dont wanna be lonely)
I wanna love you all over
Do you believe in love
Do you believe it true
Do you believe in love
Oh you can bet I believe it too
I use to have you in a photograph
(Im so glad its changed)
But now Ive got you and its gonna last
(do you believe in love)
Do you believe in love
Do you believe it true
Do you believe in love
Oh you can bet I believe it too
I played the first part backwards (I had it on LP ). It says "The music is reversible; time is not. Turn back! Turn back! Turn back! ..."
ELO is from England (the f** country) and were big in the '70s. In 1975 they released Face the Music, which, in addition to Evil Woman and Strange Magic, contained this song Fire on High, an instrumental with a "subliminal" message at the beginning.
Donovan was Britain's answer to Bob Dylan. Sunshine Superman came out in 1966 on an album of the same name. I like the chick in the video - Sue Lyon. '60s bush
Yeah, Donovan f***ed her. Donovan got all kinds of tail.
Born in Toronto, Neil Young could be consider Canada's answer to Bob Dylan. Young's most popular album, 1972's Havest, contained Old Man.
Quote:
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.
Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.
Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.
I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
I've always dug April Wine; one of the good things to come out of Canada. I considered them one of the most underrated bands of the late '70s and early '80s.
All Over Town can be found on their 1981 album, Nature of the Beast.
Quote:
Someone said you was, runnin round
Like you owned the world
Its no secret, youre the talk of the town
You know, the best of the girls
Thats right, and now you
Walked right out of my heart
You know its all over town
I said you walked walked, right right, out of my heart
You know its all over town
Now its all over
Youre so neat, youre so cute, youre so fine
You know that everybody wants some action
They see you comin and they act like its cool
Because they know that somethins happenin
Thats right, because you
Walked right out of my heart
And now its all over town
I said you walked walked, right right, out of my heart
You know the words goin round
Now its all over, now its all over
I dont care (he dont care)
I dont care
I dont care care what they say about us anymore
I dont care what they wanna do
Baby all my heart is for you
No matter what happens
Theres no reason why we still cant be friends
You know we all need someone we can talk to
No matter what they say, we both know Im right
After all weve been through
And now you walked right out of my heart
You know its all over town
I said you walked (walked), right (right), out of my heart
You know the words goin round
Now its all over
I said you walked, right out of my heart
I said you walked (walked), right (right), out of my heart
You walked right out of my heart
And now its all over town
California red rocker Sammy Hagar had a fairly successful solo career before replacing David Lee Roth in Van Halen. In 1981 he released Standing Hampton - my personal favorite Sammy album. It's an album chocked full of great songs, like this one.
Quote:
What makes him stand and fight
When he only wants to love
And why do they push so hard
When he only needs a shove
EVERY TIME I SEE HIM GIVE
IT'S HIS TURN TO TAKE
Every time I see him go
Everybody says to wait
Can't get loose
You can fight like hell
But you can't get loose
You can dream
But you can't get loose
It's holdin' on, holdin' on
Can't get loose
Oh, no, no
What makes on man rich
How's another man get so poor
What make someone care so much
For things another man can just ignore
Some questions go unanswered
And they have for quite some time
Something's forever sacred
We're just prisoners of our own minds
Chorus:
Can't get loose
We can fight like hell
But we can't get loose
We can dream
But we can't get loose
Keep's holdin' on, holdin' on
Can't get loose
Shake it, share it, share it loose
Oh yea
There she sits
With stars in her eyes
But too afraid to dance
'Cause every guy that she holds so close
Just wants to get in her pants
Oh yea
Can't get loose
Can't get loose
Can't get loose
Can't get loose
Tell me what keeps her by his side
When she's treated just like dirt
The fear of the dark unknown
Appears to be much worse than the hurt
So she stays up nights and dreams
Of a knight in shining armour
Who will rescue her one day
While time keeps going against her
Ex-Spirit member Jay Ferguson released a couple of songs in the '70s that are quite catchy. Thunder Island, the title track of the 1978 album, and Shakedown Cruise, appearing on 1979's Real Life Ain't This Way. Both received substantial airplay at the time.
Quote:
Sha la la la la la my lady
In the sun with your hair undone
Can you hear me now calling
Your name from across the bay
A summer's day laughing and a-hiding
Chasing love out on Thunder Island
She ws the color of the Indian summer
And we shared the hours without number
Until one day when the sky turned dark
And the winds grew wild
Caught by the rain and blinded by the lightning
We rode the storm out there on Thunder Island
I held her close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine
So sha la la la la la my land
In the sun with your dress undone
Now ev'ry mile away and ev'ry day
Cuts a little deeper
I'll remember the nights in the cool grass
Making love out on Thunder Island
It was thirty days around the horn
The captain says it's thirty-five more
The moon looks mean the crew ain't staying
There's gonna be some blood
Is what they're all saying
It's a shakedown cruise
And I was just another tool
There ain't no easy way out
They're gonna shake you 'til you shout
They treat you like a dog
But you're only human
You miss your home Lord,
You miss that woman
The captain laughs he says,
"You boys want some sex?"
You can squeeze the sails,
You can lick the decks
It was a shakedown cruise
I guess I just was born to lose
They tell you life is going cheap
I got myself in pretty deep
Star light lost in the night
Drift away and it feels all right
Star light alone in the night
Drift away and it feels all right
I guess it feels all right
The fever's hot, the winds are blowin' cold
The captain's crazy eye puts the fear in your soul
I heard somebody cryin' "Lord let this end
You know I'll never go to sea again"
It was a shakedown cruise
And now we're sendin' out the news
There ain't no victory at sea unless it's mutiny
Now if I don't get off alive
It's just as well I'll be waking up in heaven
'Cause I've been through hell on this shakedown cruise
They call it a shakedown cruise
Shakedown, shakedown cruise
Shakedown, shake it up and move
Shakedown, shakin' in my shoes
Robin Trower - Day of the Eagle/Too Rolling Stoned
In the '70s, a guitar god emerged on the scene from the ashes of a band called Procul Harem, and picked up his Stratocaster where Jimi Hendrix left off: Englishman Robin Trower. The two songs featured here appear on the 1974 album Bridge of Sighs. The title track is a great song, too, as it captures some of the essence of the bluesy psychedelic sounds Hendrix is known for.
Quote:
I saw a light, just up ahead
But I couldn't seem to rise up from my bed
I'm not alone, than I am
People seem to think I'm superman
But I watch for the love
I'm living in the day of the eagle, the eagle not the, dove
Its like a weight, that brings me down
If I don't move, I'm on the ground
Its in my mind, Its in my soul
Its telling me the things I can't be told
Its a watch for the love
Living in the day of the eagle, eagle not the, dove
Another day, another night
I want to love, they want to fight
I need the time, I got to be alone
I got to meet a lover on my own
I watch for the love
Living in the day of the eagle, eagle not the, dove
Frank Marino is a Canadian guitarist who, in 1982, released the album Juggernaut, which contains this song: Strange Dreams.
Quote:
Alone at night in the shadows of my room
I drift inside of a magical view
Strange dreams, invade my sleep at night
Strange dreams, they make me feel all right
The place I've seen, well you have to understand
It waits for me, come and meet me if you can
Strange dreams, invade my sleep at night
Strange dreams they make me feel all right
Oh, seems like a million fantasies
Oh, how can I sing the words to tell you all ...
Strange dreams, invade my sleep at night
Strange dreams, they make me feel all right
The dreams of life they belong to you and me
They show us why we can live in harmony
Strange dreams, invade my sleep at night
Strange dreams, they make me feel all right
Strange dreams
Strange dreams
Strange dreams, strange dreams, strange dreams
Strange dreams, strange dreams, strange dreams ...
In the early '80s, there was a Detroit-based band called 707, who released three albums from 1980-1982. The first (1980), their self-title album, contained the underground hit I Could Be Good For You. The Second album didn't contain anything noteworthy, but the third (1982) contained the mega arena rock anthem, Mega Force (covered by Frehley's Comet a few years later as Calling to You.
All three are presented here for your listening pleasure.

In 1981 an animated film hit the theaters called Heavy Metal. Despite the title, it featured more than heavy metal songs, such as Cheap Trick's Reach Out. Cheap Trick is an Illinois band that produced a number of albums and songs that got airplay in the late '70s and early '80s. This song, Reach Out, will not be found on any Cheap Trick album.
In 1980, a relatively unknown Spanish guitarist named Ray Gomez released a solo album called Volume, which contained the underground hit Make Your Move. This is a damn good song, and a K-SHE Klassic. And the guitar playing is outstanding. You probably won't be able to buy this CD in stores anywhere, but you can purchase it directly from Ray, and he'll even autograph it. The last I heard from him, he was residing in NYC. I'm surprised this is even available on youtube.
Mountain is an American rock band from Long Island. Their most well-known song is Mississippi Queen which is on their debut 1970 album called Climbing!. It's a good song -- really good. But it gets too much airplay.
A better song, in my opinion, is Nantucket Sleighride. It can be found on their second album, released in 1971 called Nantucket Sleighride. Nantucket Sleighride, in my opinion, is one of the coolest classic rock songs of all time. It's one of those songs you can listen to over and over, and it never gets old.
And just what is a "nantucket sleighride," you ask? A Nantucket Sleighride was a term used by whalers who had just harpooned a whale. The whale, realizing that it was harpooned, would try to flee and as a result, it would drag the whale boat with it. Due to the different sizes of whales, the bigger the whale, the faster the ride. The Sperm Whale was the whale that brought the most thrill, reaching speeds of 23 mph. The resulting thrill ride for the sailors lasted as long as the whale could swim before tiring out. Once the whale tired out, the sailors would kill it and harvest the oil.
Goodbye, little Robin-Marie
Don't try following me
Don't cry, little Robin-Marie
'Cause you know I'm coming home soon
My ships' leaving on a three-year tour
The next tide will take us from shore
Windlaced, gather in sail and spray
On a search for the mighty sperm whale
Fly your willow branches
Wrap your body round my soul
Lay down your reeds and drums on my soft sheets
There are years behind us reaching
To the place where hearts are beating
And I know you're the last true love I'll ever meet
Starbuck's sharpening his harpoon
The black man's playing his tune
An old salt's sleeping his watch away
He'll be drunk again before noon
Three years sailing on bended knee
We found no whales in the sea
Don't cry, little Robin-Marie
'Cause we'll be in sight of land soon
Irish Rockers Thin Lizzy enjoyed a it of success, especially with the release of their 1976 album Jailbreak. There are 3 songs from that album posted here: the anthemic The Boys Are Back in Town, Jailbreak, and one of my favorites, The Cowboy Song.
Touch formed in 1978 in NYC. They made 2 albums, and the second was not initially released. It was later released along with the first album as a double album. Their first album (1980), self-titled, contained a trio of melodic rock songs that were successful: Don't You Know What Love is, When the Spirit Moves You, and Black Star.
Stillwater came out of Warner Robins, GA in 1973 and hit it big with their song Mind Bender in 1977 on their self-title first album.
Quote:
While browsing through a pawn shop
I saw this old guitar
It's keys were bent and rusty
It's body scratched and scared
HOLY- MOSES
Would you believe that guitar began to talk
I swear it did
Now it's not like your thinkin
I wasn't stoned or drinkin
When I heard that talkin Guitar say
( Talk Box )
My Daddy was a Gibson
My Mama was a Fender
That's why they call me Mindbender
Mindbender. That's my name
You better believe it
It was a mind-bending thing
( Guitar Lead )
I said now listen Guitar
What you tryin to do
People will think I'm crazy
If they see me talkin to you
HE SAID
( Talk Box )
*What's that you say*
I Said You Better Hold Your Tongue
Now it's not like your thinkin
I wasn't stoned or drinkin
I swear I heard that Guitar say
( Talk Box )
My Daddy was a Gibson
My Mama was a Fender
That's why they call me Mindbender
Mindbender. That's my name--My Name
You better believe it Brother
It was a Mind Bending thing

Nicole was a big hit for the Texas band Point Blank. It was released on their 1981 album American Exce$$. Point Blank formed in 1974 and put out 6 album until 1982.
Santana shows their superb musical ability with No One To Depend On (as well as the other tracks on their third album Santana III (1971). This album features Neal Schon and Greg Rolie, who left Santana to form Journey.
This Vancouver band formed in 1976 and released 6 albums before they split up in 1983. There are at least two songs which received some airplay, they are Armageddon, the title track from the 1979 album, and Don't Let Him Know from their 1981 release Small Change. Armageddon has a really cool intro.
Very few people heard of these cats, but a few will recognize the song - Lake Shore Drive (1970). Is it a reference to an acid trip? Or is it a song about a real road? The answer is yes.
Quote:
There’s a road I’d like to tell you about, lives in my home town
Lake Shore Drive the road is called and it’ll take you up or down
From rags on up to riches fifteen minutes you can fly
Pretty blue lights along the way, help you right on by
And the blue lights shining with a heavenly grace, help you right on by
And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore Drive heading into town
Just slippin’ on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound
And it starts up north from Hollywood, water on the driving side
Concrete mountains rearing up, throwing shadows just about five
Sometimes you can smell the green if your mind is feeling fine
There ain’t no finer place to be, than running Lake Shore Drive
And there’s no peace of mind, or place you see, than riding on Lake Shore Drive
And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore drive heading into town
Just slicking on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound
And it’s Friday night and you’re looking clean
To early to start the rounds
A ten minute ride from the Gold Coast back make sure you’re pleasure bound
And it’s four o’clock in the morning and all of the people have gone away
Just you and your mind and Lake Shore Drive, tomorrow is another day
And the sunshine’s fine in the morning time, tomorrow is another day
And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore drive heading into town
Just snaking on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound
In 1970, this Tampa-based band released an album called Open, which contained their biggest hit - Ride Captain Ride.
Quote:
Seventy-three men sailed up from the San Francisco Bay
Rolled off of their ship, and here's what they had to say
"We're callin' everyone to ride along to another shore
We can laugh our lives away and be free once more"
But no one heard them callin', no one came at all
'Cause they were too busy watchin' those old raindrops fall
As a storm was blowin' out on the peaceful sea
Seventy-three men sailed off to history
Ride, captain ride upon your mystery ship
Be amazed at the friends you have here on your trip
Ride captain ride upon your mystery ship
On your way to a world that others might have missed
(Repeat first two verses)
(Chorus)
Ride, captain ride upon your mystery ship
Be amazed at the friends you have here on your trip
This Australian band had two songs that were popular in the US in the early '80s: No Turning Back from The Skill (1980) and We Ride Tonight from Defying Gravity 1981.
In 1980, Kansas vocalist/keyboardist Steve Walsh released a solo album, Schemer Dreamer containing this song, Every Step of the Way.
Quote:
Well they called the flat plains kansas a long, long time ago
when they'd seen the gates of glory and the fire down below
the many great decisions of the people in this place
you could tell the strength within them, you could see it their face
Well it's been 9 or 10 years since i started my ramblin' round
and from hand to mouth i was livin' playing every bar in town
though a dollar a day didn't go too far i could never deny my pride
i couldn't lay back and be taken care of while the world went by outside
So i went to school to learn but i didn't like what they'd teach
and i went to church to pray but i didn't like what they'd preach
i was hard-headed, young and angry, and i felt i could take the heat
and i had to find out my own way how to live out on the street
So i packed my bags and i left here to peruse the streets alone
and i saw that side of midnight where the beggars howl and groan
places filled with desperation where the future ain't so bright
but i remember back in kansas when we sang a song at night
We sang every step of the way
though your dreams can be real don't let them slip slide away
doesn't matter at all, let them do as they will
someday you'll hear them call for you
Goin' around and round from town to town i tried to make my way
i believed that all my searching and struggling would payoff bug some day
as a teenager i was rowdy and i played for good and bad
though i knew my songs had meaning at times it made me mad
And i'd fight the wars of nations if it brought somebody peace
yes i'd fight the wars of madmen if i knew the fight would cease
but this ol' world never stopped turning when my mind was full of doubt
so i went on and played for a dollar a day and i sang this song straight out
Hey hey, every step of the way
though your dreams can be real, don't let them slip slide away
doesn't matter at all, let them do as they will
someday you'll hear them call for you
oh yeah , for you
when they call out your name say it loud and clear
come on, come on
You must have seen me traveling' around you must have seen me there
tryin' to find out where i was heading you could have tossed to care
well, i had all the questions, i wanted the answers
i knew in my heart it was all part of the game
but every step was so much harder, every step of the way
i knew that time would beat me someday
Hey hey, every step of the way
though your dreams can be real, don't let them slip slide away
doesn't matter at all, let them do as they will
someday you'll hear them call for you
oh yeah, for you
Brewery & Shipley were a folk-rock duo from the midwest and were labeled by President Nixon as "miscreants". Their 1970 album Tarkio contains their most popular song, One Toke Over The Line.
Quote:
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Awaitin' for the train that goes home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Whoooo do you love, I hope it's me
I've bin a changin', as you can plainly see
I felt the joy and I learned about the pain that my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me, surely strike me dead
Now I'm one toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
I'm waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
I bin away a country mile,
Now I'm returnin' showin' off a smile
I met all the girls and loved myself a few
Ended by surprise like everything else I've been through
It opened up my eyes and now I'm
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
Don't you just know I waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you just know I waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
I want to be
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you just know I waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over line
One toke, one toke over the line
