Thumbs down The Twin Reasons why AR.com will Never Realize it's Potential

Misogyny

and

Racism

For some reason, both are tolerated and even encouraged here. Do you think that only dominant white males drink alcohol?

The above two are the reasons this board is never going to realize it's true commercial potential. This is why, despite dozens of search engines reading every page of the board, over half of the member list have never even posted. Obviously, a small handful of active members enjoy this and that's great for you, but you have to understand your narrow vision keeps thousands more potential members from joining up and enriching your experience. I myself find it trying at times, and frankly, it's a little boring since everyone basically seems like a "good old white boy". Hence, I've been posting here less.

Nick, it's your board and you can do what you want with it. As a successful businessperson, it is my duty to remind you that you could be making a lot of money from advertisements, but you will never realize that potential profit until you fix the two big problems listed above.

Thanks for reading, everyone.

I wouldn't enjoy the talking about boone's farm etc. They are more than welcome to join the site. If they can't handle the heat don't step into the kitchen.

Maybe if we changed the name to maltliquorreport.com, we might attract a more racially diverse crowd

Thanks for reading, everyone.
I appreciate the input. Here, I'll make you a list of responses.
  • This isn't a business, hence why it's not run like one. It's a hobby of mine, and a sandbox for me to learn coding.
  • Almost any forum is going to have a large number of registered users that never post.
  • Believe me, this place would be far less populated if I started ruling with an iron fist.
  • White males are going to be, by far, the primary demographic for any alcohol related internet message board (hell, white males are the primary demographic for most web sites, period).
  • Lack of content in the alcohol related forums is the problem, and I'm well aware of it.

People on other forums are uptight. I enjoy the laid-back anything goes type of environment this forum has.

Its a forum about alcohol not human rights.. I like the bar-like feel of it. Its actually the reason I joined.

I'd rather people feel like they can say what they think. Personally, I don't think misogyny and racism are huge problems here, though the racism was getting pretty thick for a while.

I deal with problem members on a case by case basis.

But you're not a successful businessman, therefore your responses are wrong. And, you don't have an IQ of 140.

I agree that if I decide to push this to be a more of a income earner, changes will need to be made to the barstool. Much of the crass conversation would likely move to the back room.

I have to be politically correct 14 hours a day.

Last thing I want is somebody silencing me on my leisure time.

Trust me Veryld, in real life I'm a mature, well-spoken, charismatic person. This is the type of forum that I can say stupid s*** all day and blend in.

I just really hate how the worlds gotten to the point where people shun me for making asian jokes despite being asian myself. As I stated above people need to be thick skinned about dumb comments. People will say stupid s*** about women and other races, thats life.

In actuality, I don't think people on this forum genuinely, deep in their heart, feel hatred towards women.....now blacks are a different story.

Thank you for the honest and cordial reply. I expected a flurry of jokes and smileys from the group as a whole, of course, but you took my post seriously, as it was meant to be. I wasn't complaining so much as honestly wondering about the state of things compared to what they could be.

My next question would be- you obviously have the coding down pat. Would you consider, or have you already considered, splitting AR.com into two separate websites and (maybe) forums?

The off-topic section is obviously already a success. It's my opinion that an alcohol related site could stand own it's own, as well. More tame, less of an anything goes forum, but more attractive to advertisers.

You're getting traffic and search engine hits that other sites and forums would kill for. It seems a bit of a waste not to capitalize on that and receive some monetary rewards for your work and initial investment.

You would think any rational person that joined a website and had 2 months of experience participating in said website would:

1 - Like it and participate.

2- Not like it and leave.

I don't see why we need some new poster complaining that this site doesn't cater to their needs. Like it or leave it, it ain't rocket science.

In general, a forum is a fairly s***ty income earner. A blog would be far better, if I were confident that I could get original content to fill it and keep it regularly updated.

Anyway, how much do you think AR earns? Just curious.

As it is right now? I don't think AR earns much. I'd be surprised if you're profiting at all. That's not a knock on you, obviously you're doing this for your community of friends, and that's respectable in and of itself.

However, I could see the alcohol-related forum, minus the Barstool, or with a drastically cleaned-up version, earning you several hundred to several thousand dollars a month in advertisement revenue.

As you stated, the problem is the lack of alcohol-related threads. A part of that problem is that the "Barstool" dominates the site. And, as I pointed out, while the current atmosphere is considered "cool" to this particular community, it's keeping away many more potential members than most of you realize. Potential members = potential customers of your potential advertisers.

Compare this to an automotive forum (many of you should appreciate this)- on a profitable board of that nature, the off-topic forum is a pleasant afterthought. Here, at this time, on AR, it's the main part of the forum. But, it's too big, and ultimately not benign; like a cancerous growth, it's sucking the life-blood out of what could be an industry standard-bearer, so to speak.

I just started drinking, I'll wait until I have a few more beers before I respond.
