Today's purchase was a bottle of Armagnac de Montal V.S.O.P. (~$36).
It was very sweet and pleasant on the nose, fruitier than the Landy's or Rémy Martin XO Excellence. However, it fails on the palette, at least on mine. A tad on the harsh side that comes on too strong and lingers for too long. I would rate it as similar to the Landy's. The Rémy Martin XO Excellence is holding up well (about 1/3 of the way through the bottle now). It's not like it is 10 times better than the others, it's just smoother so you can explore the more complex and subtle aspects. After a good meal that is the one I want to complement the experience.
For an experiment in making brandied peaches I also bought a bottle of cheap E&J Brandy XO for $14 -- which tastes in proportion to it's cost, but I think it will serve it's purpose for making the peaches. I want to make a couple of batches with different grades of brandy to compare the end-product and see where the best price-point lies.
I'm looking forward to continuing to explore both the younger and older armagnac's and cognac's. Larressingle XO Armagnac is next on my hit list to try when I next get the chance.
Be well
