Default Tomintoul Year Scotch

This is a single malt scotch, and I've sampled the 16 year old.

It calls itself the "gentle gram" and I can't say I disagree. It's a relatively smooth scotch, moreso than your typical 16 year old scotch.

This is a bit of a difficult review because nothing really stands out about this scotch, but it's an EXCELLENT scotch. It's well above average all around, without any real highs or lows. It sort of does everything pretty well and is a great all around Scotch.

The flavors are all mixed together and no single flavor really jumps out and screams at me. Perhaps a bit of a nutty taste, but maybe my pallet isn't developed enough yet.

Other than that, it's a fairly light, clean scotch. For the price, it's absolutely outstanding. I think I paid about $42 for the bottle. For a 16 year old single malt, that's hard to top.

Decent review. However, you say it's well above average. For reference sake, what do you consider to be an "average" single malt?

Well, 16 year is a bit of a It's kind of hard to compare a 16 year old scotch to a rare age as most scotches are 12, 15 or 18. I sort of use Chivas as my baseline, even though it's a 12 year with higher expectations for a 16 year old scotch. I usually go with green label (15 years) in that price range. Green label is just a strange scotch that you can't really compare to anything, imo. It just kind of has it's own thing going.

I drank this after sampling the Pinch Dimple 15 year, so I guess I was more comparing it to that. I'm not sure if that helped any.
