Husband went out and started firing one of the guns this evening. Said it wasn't working right yesterday when he went bird hunting. The shells weren't ejecting.
So, he says, "I'm firing this thing and if it still messes up, I'll take it to the shop." I said, "WHOA there buddy! You can't just start shooting in this neighborhood. Have you lost your freakin' mind???!!!" He grins and says, "Well, if the neighbors call just tell'em it's okay."
Me: "And if I don't answer the phone?"
Him(still grinning): "Guess they can come over or call the law."
Me: "And if the law shows up?"
Him: "Hey, I was raised to shoot a gun at home."
Me: "Uh.....well, I don't think they will take that as being okay dear."
No, I'm serious. Don't you live in a residential neighborhood? What kind of f***ing idiot goes out in his backyard and shoots guns in that environment?!
We use to live in the woods 8 yrs ago. It was nothing to go out and shoot a few rounds. Here, is a whole different ball game.
We live on two acre lots, but still. I've never cared for guns. I know how to load and shoot one, but I don't like them in the house. Even though I grew up with them in one.
No neighbors called and no law showed up. That was 2 hours ago.
Idiocy of the event is only slighty offset if there is no one living behind you for 2 miles and nothing substantial to deflect shots (or berm to accept them)

I know little about guns, but I'm assuming he was shooting a shotgun, correct? Doesn't that make the whole situation even more dangerous given the nature of shotgun shells?

Nah, shells don't travel very far (compared to a riffle or something). They just spray. I'd guess that after 125 feet or so, it's relatively ineffectively.

shotgun shells are made up of alot of small pellets. The spread out after the exit the barrel. The further they spread, the less effective it becomes. Give it 100ft and its pushing the limit of effectiveness.
Well that's a little better, but nevertheless dangerous and irresponsible.
Bird shot is the size of BB's or smaller. anything it hits is going to slow it, the thicker the more likely it is to stop it.
We test fire guns at my fathers place in a development, thing is we know where our rounds are going, downhill and into a valley / stream if they miss the target, woods so even if it deflects off something it's got alot of trees to miss. next house is about a mile away. No way in hell its going to make it anywhere near there. Once bullets or pellets hit something relativly solid they lose alot of energy and end up tumbling, leading to a short flight as its the rotation that helps keep them on their path longer, as it tumbles it no longer presents it nose forward.
It really depends on what the backdrop of where he was shooting. if there was a house or such in proximity in that direction, defiantly stupid. if its just trees and such, I wouldn't shoot alot there but a few rounds to test a problem would be fine.
