Default Opus One 1999 Meritage

Finally had a chance to try some. Had 2 botles for my b-in-laws 40th birthday. Not sure on the cost as I wasn't buying but it runs around $450-500 through a store, I would guess.

The wine itself was amazing, with a long, long, long finish and smells of blackberry and peach but the taste comes across blackberry and mineral. Overall one of the best wines I have tasted but I can think of different wines I'd rather have when considering price.

Opus One is amazing stuff - I would describe the taste as eloquent and rich; not two words I would usually ascribe to any wine. The best I've had, the '85 Merlot, had perhaps the most bold bouquets of a Merlot, and was the most full bodied Merlot I've ever had - some great hints of dark chocolate that I can easily recall.

I know of a few places around town that retail younger vintages for around 140-160, so it isn't drastically expensive. I've had a '79 cab sauv and cab franc, some '85 Merlot, and recently bought a few bottles of the 1996 vintages, Cab Sauv, Franc, and Malbec. I couldn't find any Merlot for that year, but the wine store I usually attend had a nice special on them if you bought a few of a certain kind of cigar as well, so I was happy buy what they DID offer.

I would like to try one of the younger Opus, like a '99, sometime soon. I have also heard amazing things about the 2001 Petit Verdot.

I've seen some 2003~ red wine for $140-160 at a local place. I always think about picking one up but I never do.

I think you hear about Opus One and see it at the top end of restaurant wine lists and then you get to try it and... it was great, no doubt but it is like it can never live up to the built in hype. Like sex with Jessica Alba.

Sex with Jessica Alba truly would be like the proverbial cask of Amontillado. You think everything is going well, and suddenly some a****** has sealed you in a very dark, dark, scary place with no way out.

Can I say I was not at all impressed with the Cab Sauv compared to the other Opus One I've tried? Is that allowed? It was fine, of course, a great cigar wine - but I've had better Cabs for 30.
