So, I'm new to drinking
Well, like the topic says, I'm pretty new to drinking. And so a little story first for those of you that want to read it. Up until I was 20 I never drank any alcohol, not even a few sips of beer. I was one of those people that thought they were better than everyone else since they don't drink. Also my parents always talked about how drinking is bad, which I respected but a little bit too much.
So the first time I drank anything was when my and my brother and sister went to some bars and clubs on vacation. I just sat around with a beer but didn't really drink, just had it so they don't feel weird. Anyways there were some girls I wanted to dance with but I was too embarrassed so I started drinking a few beers. Then I realized it wasn't so bad. I always used to think it was like if I drink a beer ill be running all over the tables naked.
Anyways so now that I realized booze isn't so bad and I like it
So if you are wondering by now what the hell I even wrote this post for, its pretty much for some suggestions on what to try. There is so much stuff out there and I have no idea what the difference is. I don't want to just randomly grab stuff off the shelves.
So from what I've liked and disliked so far. Beers = yuck. The only one I actually enjoy drinking without feeling like I am drinking someones pee is Guinness and that stuff is stout, so maybe what is some kind of other stout I might like to try? My favorite drink so far was Smirnoff cranberry twist, I like to just drink it straight. I've got polish genes so I'm guessing I'll like other vodkas too Ok not funny but I like the smiley. I tried drinking some tequila and put too much salt in my mouth. Also I drank some bacardi (the clear one) and it tasted like paint thinner, it was super cheap though so I guess its ok drinking games, but I like to just sit around and drink at my own pace.
Ok this post probably sounds really dumb but what kinda stuff would you guys suggest me getting. I will probably only get like 3 or 4 bottles since I have to get my roomy to take it through the isle for me. So far the two on my list are Jack Daniels (Slash's drink of choice :P) and the Cranberry twist.
Oh also I forgot to ask one more question. How long after taking a shot does it take till you start feeling the effects? On the internet I couldn't find any information, and one website said its however long it takes food to get out of your stomach... well I have no idea how long that is.

Welcome to the site man, glad you broke your conditioning that alcohol is evil. You should direct your beer queries to the beer forum, you'll get plenty of great advice there Ah, where do I begin? Like anything else, some liquors you are going to like right away, and some you may have to acquire a taste for. My advice when trying a new liquor is to taste it straight, over ice, to get an idea of the flavor. For a beginner like you, mixed drinks will probably be the way to go for awhile (it all depends on what you can handle). Doesn't have to be anything complicated, it could be just Jack-and-Coke, or vodka and cranberry juice. I don't particularly care for Smirnoff, but it's a good starter vodka. The only one the "Twists" that I have had is the Smirnoff Limetwist, which was mixed with cran juice(which wasn't half bad I must say, so you should consider that one). You have Jack Daniels on your list I see, that's always a good staple whiskey, you should also consider trying it's Kentucky counterpart Jim Beam. I strongly advise you get a bottle of gin also, it doesn't look like you've tried that yet. A few I would recommend are Tanqueray, Bombay, and Beefeaters, all three are good places to start. Really the best mixer for gin is tonic water, but it can be mixed with other stuff too. For example, I have tried it with lemonade, to decent effect. The most important thing is to try new things, experiment with your own ideas, and don't overdo it or else this = you

for vodka, try Grey Goose. Jack is a pretty good one too. Wild Turkey is my choice usually for wiskeys/bourbons.

Welcome
I would say if you wanna get a good taste of every type of alcohol genre:
Makers Mark, Crown Royal Reserve, Jack Daniels Single Barrel
Grey Goose, Belvedere, Chopin
Capt. Morgan Private Stock
Jager
I'm not a big gin or scotch fan so I won't say anything about them

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't think there's any reason to go that expensive when you're just starting out I usually recommend people start low and go high. So they get an appreciation of the quality of the higher end stuff. It's kinda like getting an Enzo for your first car

Interesting analogy
He can go low but even then, the lower brand s*** (Jose, baccardi, absolut, etc) fit into what I call the "underage" drinks. When you get older you wanna look good when you actually orde rsomething from the bar, not cheap.
