In case no one else said it. I only just realized why the board was behaving nicely. I understood why you had em but the f***ing things were slowing the board way down. So thanks.
By the way, the only negative that I've found since members no longer see ads is that the ads aren't targetted worth a damn. I suppose it's sense the adsense spider no longer crawls the site as much, but I'm not positive. I may experiment with adding an tiny obscure text ad somewhere, but I haven't decided on that either. They were really causing the board to slow down for you? Was it the image ads that were doing it? I noticed some of them were flash instead of static images...
I agree. I don't like Google's image ads, and I've even removed them for guests. I'm using a different company for those now.
I think I've decided how to handle this though... The problem is that guest traffic isn't high enough for the Google Adsense spider to thoroughly crawl the site, so the ads that are displayed for guests aren't very relevant.
I'm going to turn on text ads for members with 500 posts or less. Don't like any ads? Post more...

Typically I'd click a link and everything would more or less freeze for about 4-6 seconds before the site would respond and pages started loading. I didn't really pay attention to what kinds of ads caused it as I had decided to accept it and do my best to ignore it. The best I can tell you is that it was consistant. It didn't seem like sometimes it was slow. It was always slow. Didn't matter where I was. If I clicked a link I was gonna wait. My gut tells me it had less to do with the format of the ad and more to do with the code behind the ad. Like maybe it was doing some longass lookup to decide what ads to show.

That can't be it, since I've been using the same conditionals this entire time. I use an if conditional to check what usergroup a person is in, then display the code for ads accordingly.
Right now the ad layout is:
Guests - Text block (google), image block (not google)
Members with 499 posts or less - 468x60 text ads (google)
Members with 500 posts or more - nothing
You can't see it from source since the pages are dynamic (despite the html extension), but the code is still processed the same way.
I really think it was those google image ads that were causing the problem.

Dunno man. I don't really know how google ads work so I just took a pot shot. Put up a test forum that only uses the image ads and I'll bang away at it if you want.
No ads no matter how much/little I post. HOSTS files, people. HOSTS files.
