Tried the Avery IPA (rated 90 at ratebeer.com) and another one I can't quite recall the name of. I had high expectations, but didn't really like them at all. Not my style I guess.
I stopped by a beer store that actually had a nice selection (100 miles from my house though ) and tried several. 2 different IPA's, 2 different Heffeweizen, and something else that escapes me.
IPAs aren't friendly to many people really. Of course a lot people try them when they are cold, but cool or near 50* seems to make the flavor smoother and more pronounced.
I'll rarely drink an IPA, they seem more like a cold weather beer to me anyways.
I've had 90+ rated beers that I hated but liked others in the same family of brew.
Very true. I had a 98%+ brew that I drain poured. It was an imperial stout. I like stouts and other imperial beers, but an imperial stout is just way too much for me.
I know plenty of people that do not like IPAs, just the same as people who do not like any 'green bottle' beer (usually sucks to me too), or the anti-hefeweizen people. To each their own.
At first when I was trying beer I didn't like stuff with very much hops in it at all. There are still times when I may want a more malty beer, but beers with lots of hops have definitely grown on me. I have only tried a couple IPAs, Odell IPA and Wynkoop Monkey's Fist IPA, but have loved them both and am eager to try more. Highly-hopped beers are definitely an acquired taste, and I can't blame those who don't like them.
