The Juggernaut's adventures in India..

I thought I would just start a thread an post up s*** to keep it all in one place... I'm sure I'm going to have lots more to post, and I'm just really getting started here.

I'm settled into my hotel, which is called "Surf & Sand Pune", and is supposed to be one of the nicest hotels in the city. Seems to be a pretty nice place so far and the food is at least decent.

The first thing you notice when you get to India is that there is a distinct smell. I don't know how to describe it other than it kinda smells a faint hint of what it would smell like if you mixed oil, grass, and cow s*** and burnt it. You smell this everywhere you go. I even taste it in the food. Every time I eat something here I'm really wondering what it is I'm ingesting... so I've eaten very little.

The other thing you notice is overwelming, extreme poverty. Everything is very run down, with the exception of Western businesses and places that cater to them. Their are shanties everywhere, and I've already seen people bathing in the streets, and half naked kids running around, cows, goats, stray dogs all over the place. It is generally pretty dirty, and for some reason there are piles of rubble and trash everywhere. To give you an idea.. this is what the Central Bank of India office in Bombay looked like.

You also notice that everywhere you go, EVERYTHING is under construction. The people who do the work typically live in shanties on the property where they work, and if the job is finished, they have to move... so they seem to make sure the job is never done.

I arrived Pune yesterday afternoon... this is what the terminal at Pune looks like..

Very small time, I think there's like 3-4 flights a day out of there. What was funny is that it was about a 3 hour drive from Bombay to Pune, and between getting through airport security, the flight, and getting our luggage back it took about 4 hours.

If you look carefully at the photos there, I've already committed my first cultural blunder... the blue signs in the very background say "Photography is strictly prohibited" on them. DOH.

The hotel I'm in is very Western, but also has some weird quirks to it... This is the lobby of the hotel.

All the lights in the room, the A/C, everything is all controlled through this funky little panel. There aren't light switches for most of this stuff. It took me about 5 minutes just to figure out how to shut the lights off in the room.

And of course there's the mini-bar in the room, which for some reason has a keylock on it. No idea why... but it's funny that my ex-GF was joking with me that I was gonna come here and drink Kingfisher beer (it's like the Indian version of Budweiser).. and sure enough, what's in there? Kingfisher. At least the hotel in Bombay had Foster's lager in it.

More pics and adventures will be coming soon... this weekend we're going to hire a driver and take a tour of the city.

This is how they build roads in India..

Want some chicken? This guy can hook you up.

This is what I'm talking about as far as poverty.. and bear in mind, these are the NICE places of the poor people.. Some people don't even have that. I've seen people sleeping under a tarp on the sidewalk.

If you gotta take a dump, this is the place to go... just make sure you have money with you.

They have 7-Eleven in India.. everyone that works there is American and speaks perfect English... (not really, but it sounds f***ing funny)

One thing interesting about traffic lights in India is that they have count down timers on them to let you know how long it is before the light turns green.

Some pics I took of an eagle soaring overhead at the building where I've been working.

The road leading up to Osho Teerth Park...
